Suite success
Manufacturing should be simple. The order arrives; the parts get made; and an invoice is sent shortly after delivery. If only it was really like that.
In reality, we all know that the complexities and vagaries of modern manufacturing demand the application of a precise science called ‘scheduling’. Machinery takes a look at modern production management for the smaller company. |

Energetic market
The renewable energy, power generation, oil and gas industries today offer considerable opportunity for UK manufacturers. The UK is blessed with an abundance of natural energy resources, including large, unexplored reserves of oil, gas and coal. Also, thanks to our long coastline and exposure to wind, wave and tidal power, the UK has Europe’s richest renewable energy resource. All of which makes oil and gas, power generation and renewable energy hugely important to the country’s economy – in 2002, it was estimated that 264,000 jobs (source DTI) in the UK depended directly or indirectly on the oil and gas industry alone.

The end of big CADCAM?
Each year, market analyst CIMdata publishes a review of the CAM market in its NC Software and Related Services Market Assessment. The 2005 report showed that, in the 10 years up to 2004, the three major suppliers of high-end, CAD-integrated CAM systems, Dassault, UGS and PTC, saw their combined market share fall from almost half of the total to less than one third. In contrast, many CAM-focused suppliers saw their market share increase, in particular Delcam, which is now firmly established as the world’s leading specialist supplier of NC software and services. |

You have data: use it
There is a host of data contained within a CNC control system that can provide important information on machine tool performance, the cutting process, and the part being machined. This data can be used for all sorts of production control and management information, says Seiki Systems, Brighton. |
